There is one space in my entire house that I let get super-duper messy…can you guess which room?
My thought process is that the kids need at least one spot where they can be kids. Where they can let loose. Play. And be crazy. Errrr, be crazy without getting in trouble. Because let’s be honest…they be crazy all the time.
On some days it looks like the roof was lifted off the house and it rained Tonka Trucks in there. Actually most days it looks like that. And I’m ok with that. Of course, for the photo shoot I did a HUGE clean up and I almost broke my toe on a spiderman figurine in the process. Gah.
This is their space and they have my permission to play Magna Tiles, dinosaurs and Power Rangers all at the same time…without someone yelling in their ear to clean up. <—–ME
We love hanging their art on the wall each week. It’s fun to see them get so excited about clipping it to the hook for the world to see. It also gives us something to do with all the paint and coloring projects they bring home. They each have 2 hooks and they get to switch out their art about once a week.
This room is open to the dining room and so while I wanted it to be playroom-ish…I also wanted it to flow with the rest of the house. That way when I pick it all up {which is rare} it at least looks like a bonus room not just a room full of too many toys. Plus, I HAD TO HAVE THIS RUG from RugsUSA. You know my obsession with area rugs is quite uncontrollable. Ahem.
My dad built this play table for the boys for Christmas this past year. I almost bought one at Land of Nod, but after having a heart attack when I saw the price…I hit up my pops do create a replica. Dang he’s good.
I will say this… the natural light in this room makes me ridiculously giddy. It’s one of the main reasons I decided to change the paint color from dark brown to light grey. It just feels so bright and happy now!
I’ll often take my laptop in there during the day and work in the sunlight.
The kids still love to destroy ALL of our rooms in the house. So I’m not gonna lie to you and say they ONLY play in here. But I will say they play in here a good majority of the time.
Especially in the winter when we can’t go outside to play. Y’all, if you have boys… winter is the devil.
Let’s talk about the red couch for a second? The red couch is the first “big girl” couch I ever owned. Apparently at the time I liked boldness. I remember my dad telling me that I would regret buying a bright red couch.
But I must honestly say…I still like it. And I can’t get rid of it. Ha! It seems perfect for a playroom, right?

I used to be all anal about my baskets on my built-ins matching and being organized. But I got over that real quick when I realized it was too hard to keep track of what went where.
All I care about now during “clean up”? That you can walk through the room without breaking your toe on a plastic army guy. So if that means they throw cars in with trains and superhero figures in with Legos and dvd’s in with books… So be it.
I pick my battles wisely. Some things aren’t worth the stress. Can’t I get an AMEN?
